- History
-
Amelia Hetcher harbors a dark secret.
She is an orphan, heralding from a middle-class family from outside of Klausenburg. A few years ago, the family suffered a terrible tragedy with the young boy dying from an unexpected fall. Not long after, her mother hung herself in her despair, trapped in a cycle of grief she escaped from the only way she knew how. Having lost his son and his wife in only a few short weeks, her father became a despondent drunkard, indulging himself towards an early grave and becoming abusive towards his daughter and his friends. Debts began piling up, and it became a certainty that he would lose the farm and die in a gutter somewhere.
Her secret is buried deep, something she will barely even admit to herself. Jealousy digs its claws deep in the soul of mankind. Having spent most of her life as an only child, sure to inherit the homestead, the sudden presence of a male heir could be argued that he stole what was rightfully hers. Amelia tells herself the fall was an accident, no one could have prevented it.
But it was not so.
A distracted child too close to the edge, a gentle nudge with no witnesses, and her birthright would be returned to her. Or so the fleeting fantasy had been. Instead of a few days of tears and then moving on, her mother was dead and her father soon to be, and her inheritance lost to the bottom of a bottle. Her memory of the event is hazy, forged with falsehoods she attempts to convince herself of.
As an urchin and orphan for the later part of her childhood, she learned how to be a pickpocket, how to sing and survive on her own. But she was not alone for long. For in the dark of Transylvania, there are things far more dangerous than cutthroats and highwaymen.
Luckily for Amelia, during her self-imposed exile she was discovered by Prince Jürgen of Magdeburg in the forests of Mediasch. She was beset upon by a creature of the night, a fearsome lycanthrope seeking easy prey. Instead the valiant Prince and his knights came to the rescue, slaying the beast in a gruesome melee that claimed several of the Teutonic Knights. The Prince took a liking to Amelia, who was now in a life-debt to him, and escorted her to Balgrad before he was forced to return to Magdeburg.
Instead of taking her back with him, he left her with instructions. There were creatures, foul and cruel, at work in Transylvania and he needed to know about them when he returned. He charged her with discovering about these entities and reporting to him whatever she found, but to remain unnoticed. And to never reveal her loyalty to him.
Of course, to Amelia, the Prince was a powerful benefactor, but not someone she was willing to die for. But failure to serve someone in that position of power had consequences of its own. She feigns subservience and absolute loyalty to him, in the hopes of staying in his good graces long enough to grow old, and perhaps retire from the rewards he promised.
