Guide to Creating Your First Character on Endless Nights & Character Progression

Endless Nights is a dynamic World of Darkness: Dark Ages community where every story begins with a mortal. This guide will help you create a compelling character that fits into Dark Ages: Vampire, Werewolf, Mage, or Inquisitor chronicles.

Step 1: Concept Creation

Your first character starts as a mortal—a blank slate amidst the supernatural chaos of the Dark Ages. Work with your storyteller to craft a character concept that ties into the ongoing narrative. If you wish to be a ghoul, speak to your storyteller to come up with a concept that may fit with your first character.

1. Determine Concept:

• What is your character's role in society?

Examples: Farmer, knight, merchant, monk, scholar, thief.

• What motivates your character?

Examples: Survival, faith, ambition, revenge, love.

2. Consider the Chronicle Theme:

Align your character's background with the tone of the chosen game (Vampire, Werewolf, Mage, or Inquisitor). For example:
Vampire: A merchant aspiring for wealth in a city dominated by Cainites.
Werewolf: A woodsman who has unknowingly strayed too close to Garou lands.
Mage: A monk studying forbidden knowledge.
Inquisitor: A peasant deeply devout and distrustful of heresy.

Step 2: Character Sheet Creation

Your storyteller will guide you in filling out a character sheet appropriate for the chronicle. Focus on mortal attributes and abilities, as your character is not yet supernatural.

1. Attributes: Prioritize key strengths—Physical, Social, or Mental.
• Example: A blacksmith might prioritize Physical, while a priest might prioritize Mental.
2. Abilities: Choose skills relevant to your mortal life.
• Example: A scholar might have Knowledge (Academics, Theology), while a thief might have Talents (Larceny, Stealth).
3. Backgrounds: Select traits reflecting your character's connections and resources.
• Example: Allies (a village council), Resources (a small income), Fame (local reputation).

Step 3: Story Integration

Work with your storyteller to ensure your character's backstory integrates smoothly into the narrative. Consider:
Starting Location: Where does your story begin?
Motivations and Goals: What does your character hope to achieve?
Potential for Supernatural Involvement: How might your mortal interact with vampires, Garou, mages, or inquisitors?

Step 4: First Character Approval

Submit your completed character sheet and backstory to your storyteller for approval. This process ensures your character fits into the world and has a compelling arc to explore.

Step 5: Creating Additional Characters

Once your first character is approved, any subsequent characters can begin with the same amount of experience as your most experienced character onsite. This system ensures:
Continuity of Progress: You won't lose the effort invested in previous characters.
Creative Freedom: You can explore new concepts without starting from scratch (unless you choose to).

Example: If your first character dies after earning 20 XP, your next character can begin with 20 XP.

Step 6: Character Growth and Development

As your character interacts with the supernatural, they may evolve into a vampire, werewolf, mage, or inquisitor. The storyteller will guide you through this transformation if and when it fits the story.

With these steps, you're ready to bring your mortal to life and embark on an unforgettable journey in the Dark Ages!
